Two thoughts come to mind...overheating and bad memory.

You might be surprised by the various temperatures
returned by "cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/*/temperature".

To test the memory, I suggest memtest86. It is available
on floppy or on various rescue cds.

Hi Rahul, just one thing, do you notice that your comp freezes only when your browser is open? I've had the same trouble with mint 9 and 10 and noticed that this happens only when my browser was open. Also I do not know about you but I had only 512 mb of ram. I solved this issue in two ways. If you find that it is the browser that is causing all the trouble, just go to Edit>preferences>content and uncheck Enable javascript. this will solve your problem. if however you want the added functionality of running javascript, and if you too have 512 mb ram you'll have to add more. I don't know if this is your trouble, but it may be worth a shot.
