Mint 17.3 screen freeze up

After choosing "bcmwl-kernel-source" as recommended, choice loads and then screen freezes. The restart button is hi-lighted but can move cursor to restart.

Mint, especially with Cinnamon, may be a bit much from your old Compaq (found on your other post). Graphics problems, especially with older AMD video systems are very common and AMD does not support the old cards with proprietary drivers. I'd look at using a lighter distro, like MX-15, for better results. It has built in support for Broadcom WiFi (which is the file you tried to install).

Hi...

First, please read the information here. The more details we have about your issue, the better we can help you find a resolution. ;)

Please open a terminal and post the results of...

Code:

lspci -nnk | grep -i net -A2
No screenshots, please. If you don't know how to bring up a terminal, an easy way to do this in Mint is to press the Ctrl+Alt+T keys together at the same time. Once it's up, simply copy and paste the command above into the text field and press "Enter." The copy and paste the entire results into your next post. :)

Also, is this the same computer you mentioned in the Introductions sub-forum, the Compaq V5000? What did you mean by "The restart button is hi-lighted but can move cursor to restart?"

Regards...

This is the kind of help I was looking for. I will look for a MX-15 distro

While Mint is the current "darling" of distros, it does not do a great job with older hardware - especially with Cinnamon...

What I meant by screen freezing up was a screen which had a prompt to restart computer. The cursor would not move. I couldn't get to a command window. The only thing I could do was shut down computer.

Hi...

Thanks. :)

Let us know how MX-15 works out. If you decide to continue with Mint, please supply the results requested in my earlier post. Thanks! :)

Should I download a 64 bit or 32 bit for the Presario V5000 that has a AMD Turion 64 chip? Wondering if I should download MX-15_64.iso or MX-15.01_386.iso

NGIB 01-07-2016 10:24 AM

It's likely 64 bit but of that I am not sure. To be safe, the 32 bit version runs on anything...

Looks like MX-15 loaded from .iso DVD. Couldn't really tell if it was finished with installation to HDD.

Exited and told BIOS to start from HDD. I get repeating 3 lines. I saw this before with Mint 17.3.

I think I need some installation instructions.

NGIB 01-07-2016 05:07 PM

The MX installer will tell you when it's finished so I'm not sure I understand what you did.

Perhaps you just booted from the live media, looked around, and rebooted. You have to actually install it to the hard drive using the icon on the top left of the screen after it boots...

From what I see here and here, you should be able to use the 64 bit version, however, I'm not sure how well it work if you only have 2 GB's of memory.

I got it working, thanks to the help I received here.
I did the 32 bit MX-15.
At first, I thought it was loaded/installed on my HDD but actually was only in RAM. Once I read the instructions and clicked on the installer icon, things went great.
Now I need to learn/relearn how to do thing in Linux environment.
At least I won't be getting a pop up every hour or so prompting me to go to Windows 10.

Thanks for the help!!!

You're welcome, glad it worked for you...
