Microsoft files...
I have recently installed RedHat 7.1 and I'm trying hard to never go back. So far, I really am enjoying this new challenge but need help dealing with files from the "MS suite", especially Excel. This could be a deciding factor for me, please help.

like are you needing to read excel files in linux, or you need a program to replace it with in linux?
there is always staroffice, or you can try out kde's new office suite that comes with it if that is what your looking for. if you need to run Excel in linux, you can always try to get wine, an emulator to get Excel to run in linux. |
You might want to check out StarOffice.

Thanks for pointing me towards StarOffice, I will download and install it shortly.
Quick question: KDE seems very complete, but do I really have to right-click and unmount a floppy before removing it from the drive? Everyday I overcome a new obstacle. I am looking for the right book, should I get one specific to my version of RedHat(7.1), or will any recent book on Linux get me there? |
Bill,
I would recommend getting one specific to 7.1 if that is the distribution that you plan on using for future needs. I have two that have been very good. Linux RH7.1 Bible and Linux 7.1 Secrets. Both are well written and easy to follow. |
I have downloaded StarOffice to my harddrive, I have tried to install it from different locations without success. I followed the very limited instuctions found at the Sun website, and the setup HOWTO was geared towards installation from CD. Please help, and keep in mind that I am days old on Linux.
I tried commands I saw on another post make make install Can I do this from Xterm? |
WRT unmounting floppies. Linux has a much more rigid approach to floppy drievs and so forth compared to windows. You mount a disk and it becomes part of the file system. It does make sense when you think abuot it to officially say it's no longer there before you remove it physically. You'll notice the same for cd-roms, the only difference being that CD-ROMS ALWAYS use a software eject, rather than the brute force approach used in 99% of floppy drives. You must have come across many problems in windows where you try and load a floppy before you remeber to insert it. Windows can then get very confused in some cases.
Well, that's the vague idea... not sure abuot the indepth version. OK, it's not as user friendly but it really does make more sense. Compiling.... I presume your file came in the form of an RPM? if so you *SHOULD* have a program called gnorpm installed, which automates installation of rpm (Redhat Package Maintenence) files. You might need to have Gnome installed for that to work. If it's not, the lower level version is to run something like.... rpm -iv StarOffice.rpm from a command line, making the obvious changes. the -iv just shows you more info about what it's doing. the 'make' and 'make install' commands are used for when you have downloaded a tar.gz file. With these files you a meant to recompile the entire program from scratch so as to make it work better on your machine. First you unzip the file using 'tar -zxvf xxxxxx.tar.gz', then change to the directory it's made, and run './configure'. This file creates instructions on how to compile the program to suit your system, and checks that it will work. 'make' then compiles the program using data collected by configure. 'make install' then erm.. installs the program! Assuming the compilation worked. chris xxxx Don't be scared of terminal windows and such, You can get so much more done from a little black box at times than clicking around a window manager. chris xxxx chris xxxx |
Thanks for helping. The Staroffice file is a '.bin' file. I should have specified that earlier.
|
Ahh.. easiest of all. For .bin read .exe. just run the bugger!
You might need to make sure it's executable first. do chmod a+x xxxxx.bin to ensure it's marked as an executable file chris xxxx |
While in the diretory with the file I type:
chmod a+ filename.bin (no response) chmod a+ ./filename.bin (no response) filename.bin (no response) |
Hi
Star office install instructions are confusing! Just click on the downloaded programme and it should just install. As long as you didn't Download as/into /root permissions shouldn't be a problem. Jim |
OK! I had RW but not Exec access. Thank you.
