Microphone working ok, but not capture?


My microphone is plugged in ok, and if I increase microphone volume in alsamixer than I can hear what I'm saying into it. The thing is capturing the sound works not at all...


Help?

Well what program are u using to record your voice?

Audacity? Skype?

Sorry for not having replied sooner... Was at my GF's.

I'm using kRec, but the thing is not even skype works. It's not a program-related issue I think. It's probably more to do with alsa configuration...

I've looked everywhere but can't find the solution.

Your welcome, seems a hardware recognition problem...

Try typing in google: "name_of micro + Linux"

use the command line
amixer
to see what the settings are
generally something like
amixer set Capture cap 15
amixer set Mic cap
will do it

Ok, so when I do amixer set Capture cap 15 the capture works.

However, the thing that works too is playing what the microphone hears all the time, so here I am, sitting at my keyboard listening to me typing unnaturally loudly.

Any tips on turning off mic playback?

you need a good mixer so you have better controll over card.
what type of soundcard ?

but for now
amixer set Capture nocap

Soundcard is soundblaster Live! Just as compatible as you can get.

I'm using kde, so arts be my sound system, but it doesn't seem to wrap skype.

Also, I can't find oss compatibiliy layer's devices in /dev ... Could that be it?
