Method to determine OS of server

I would like to be able to determine what O.S a server is using on a site I'm visiting. How is this done?

Thanks for your expertise!

See nmap

Of course, standards compliant HTTP servers return OS and other information in HTTP Response Header.

And of course, on my site you will get no such information about any of my servers.

I often use Netcraft for this, too.

I feel I should point out that using nmap to scan a server without the permission of the owner could be considered illegal hacking in some jurisdictions. It's not likely to bring the police to your door if you do it once on a normal web site but it's not something I would encourage anyone to do out of habit.

use netcraft

Mr Jones has all ready said it.

Now you tell me.:jawa: The purpose of this is trying to find a email provider with free pop that runs linux. Inbox.com is not all that satisfying.

I did a Netcraft inquiry on gmail and it came back GSE. Is this googles own operating system?
