Mencoder question

I have been reading around on Mplayers docs and couldnt come across if Mencoder could convert a .avi (Xvid) to a .mp4.

Well actually to narrow my question is mp4 part of the MPEG-4 package?

thanks,
Video encoding == clueless

Solved

If anyone ever needs this info try using ffmpeg (which im sure you could just as easy use mencoder)

ffmpeg -vcodec xvid -b 1000 -qmax 10 -bufsize 8192 -g 300 -acodec aac
-ab 128 -ac 2 -i origin.avi -s 624x352 -aspect 16:9 output.mp4

Just out of curiosity, this process is the only thing that keeps me going back to XP. What kind of time did it take for you to complete this process? I can convert an avi and burn it in XP in about 20 min., and it has been about 4 hours on my Debian box, and it is usually about a 92% CPU load while it is running. 2400 Athlon, 768 ram, not exactly a pooch for a machine. Thanks I'll give your method a try next time I do one.

As far as I know, avi and mp4 are just container formats. So it really doesn't matter what file extension you have as long as it is xvid.

you can look at the -of <FORMAT> in general encoding options in the mencoder man page.

Currently supports -of mpeg OR -of avi. Default is avi.

It is still a Beta Code so beware. Also look at MPEG4IP project if you are curious.

Tux,
