memory hog

Some thing is hogging my memory (256mb). when I start with fresh boot it is almost half used up. after being on net for a hour it is now 26.36 free physical. total swap=522 mb.

the memory information is as follows:
total phys mem=255.53mb
free phys mem:=29.67mb
shared mem:=0.26mb
buffer mem=5.24mb
cached mem=116.69mb
total swap=522.07mb
free swap=522.07mb

on the graph of kde control center the first graph is total memory free ram and swap=70%
the second physical is cached ram 45% used shared 40%
third virtual memory, free swap=100%

right now I have open 1 komqueror, 1 kde mail client, a conection to internet dial up running, and the kde control center. where would I start looking to free up memory? John

Linux will load as much as possible in RAM...this is normal. when your swap of 522 fills up, that is when you want to start worrying. I never make a swap of over 125 megs and it is rarely ever touched or used at all.
