Media Master opens then closes straight away

I bought an Acer Aspire One this weekend and I have Never even seen a Linux based system and have absolutely no idea what I am doing. I have been able to work some things out for myself but I cannot play any video files. The Media Master only stays open for about 2 seconds then closes. Can anyone help me. Assume I know nothing about computers and you would be right on the money. I need Linux for Dummies.
