Meaning of Folders and Directories

I am new at linux and started to learn commands etc... but i wonder about folders contents.There are lots of folders in linux and each of this has lots of contents can anybody tell me about theese folders and directories contents
example
-------------
/etc directiories contents ............
/var directories contents .............

and if i install a program to which directory it is installed?
