MD5Sum for checking

I've gone to sites where I can download IsO's and sometimes they tell you that you can check the integrity of your downloaded file (before trying to install it!) by using a md5sum. What is that all about? How do you do it?

Here is one as an example, for FreeBSD

Oops, but my question still isn't answered. How can i use a linux program to check it, if I don't have linux installed and want to check the install cd?
