SOS please: RH9 peripherals not working

Hi another Linux newbie. Have installed RH9 (from download ISO's)-thanks RedHat. Install went fine, no hangs or crashes. system is IBM Aptiva, AMD K6-2, 256 RAM. worked through slowness issues. None of peripheral devices work, Canon S520 printer on parallel, HP 3500c scanner on USB and internal dial-up modem, none work although all recognized by the hardware detection during installation. CUPS shows printer and prints test page but no Apps(open office etc) nor GNOME print manager will see it. same with scanner, XSANE won't see it, and Modem not seen by Internet Wizard, even though hardware checker reports it during boot up. Any help appreciated, have been fighting it for 1-1/2 weeks, could not find any useful help doing GOOGLE searches.
