Matlab on linux


i'm familiar with Matlab working on windows.
does the same version of Matlab work on Linux?

There is a linux version. You can try FreeMat, Octave,Scilab and others.

No. There are alternatives and some of them are free. Have you considered Sage:

Sage Open Source Math

They even have an online notebook server (free signup):

Sage Notebook

I am sure Matlab has some features that Sage doesn't. But sage works everywhere and is free.
