Master Boot Record issue

Hi everyone,

I've installed roughly 20 Knoppix workstations at my job and never had any issue. But on one (a Compaq Evo) I installed it and when I finished and booted up I got an error telling me that the master boot record had been changed and that I needed to recover it. After doing that in BIOS it just made things worse.

I tried with a different hard drive and I still got the same error. I even installed on another Compaq Evo and didn't have this problem. How do I fix this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

quick thought : look in the bios for virus scan and disable it, then try

Compaqs (and some other maunfs) can be a bit tricky because they often have a hidden partition on the hard disk that has the manufacturers 'manageabilty' (bios extensions) stuff built in.

I'm suspecting something to do with that and its interrelation to the on-board bios is tripping you up, but I am not quite sure what to suggest to cure it. Sometimes its only a matter of understanding the terminology and realising that what you think of as the first partition may not be what Grub sees as the first partition.

Thanks for the help, as it turns out it was just an issue with BIOS. I just had to disable Master Boot Record Security and it worked fine.

Thanks again!
