Is there one kernel that comes with the "out of the box" version of 8.2 (i.e. 2.4.18-6) or are there different kernels dependant on the type of hardware it is being installed on?

there are different kernels available for different architecture's, but on the i586 iso's you will have downloaded then that is the only one that will be there.
