mandriva upgrade

I am currently running Mandrake 10.0 on my laptop. I bought it when it first was available May of 04 I think.

I've just downloaded Mandriva 2006 and was considering upgrading.

I currently have a couple of issues with the sound driver, the ethernet driver and recently with FireFox. I've been trying to get Skype to work....

What can I expect if I upgrade? does an upgrade only update the kernel source or can I expect drivers and some of the base applications to be updated also?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

You can expect it all to be upgraded. New versions of softwaretitles, new kernel. If you have been updating your current version of mandrake on a regular basis, don't expect any great surprises.

Go ahead and upgrade. I did it a week ago, and it all went just fine If not you have LQ

upgrades?

I'll be honest, I haven't been doing any upgrades.

I have a lot of things configured on this install, will I have to reconfigure anything?

Thanks

Most likely: no. But offcourse, no guarantee given

You could also browse the docs to see what's new:
http://wwwnew.mandriva.com/en/commun.../documentation
http://wwwnew.mandriva.com/en/individuals/products

Beeing careful and preparing aint bad at all. Saves you alot of time later on.

If your system is running just great, why think about upgrading? (Im just curious)

Motivation for upgrading

The system works well overall, but I have some annoying problems. Problems I could definitely live with.

The system hangs once in a while, I have driver issues with the sound card and ethernet driver. I'm on a project where eveyone is using Skype. I can't get Skype to work on the Linux partion so I go to the Windows partition everytime I need to use it. It would be helpful to get it to work on my Linux partition because I spend most of my day working in that partition.

I understand that the new Mandriva has it built in.

Yes it has. Most likely your driverproblems with sound and eth. will end when doing an upgrade.

Well, im gonna stick to what i wrote earlier: Do the upgrade, and let us hear if you get into any trouble

Sincerely, Jørgen

upgrade finished!!!

I finished the upgrade to Mandriva 2006.

What is the best way to keep up with the updates from now on. Is it best to just click system->configuration->packaging->mandrake update? or is there another preferred method?

How do I find out about updates? is there a website I should go to look or is it simple a matter of every few months doing an update?

I really like the new OS, the ethernet driver and audio driver problems are gone and the system doesn't hang for long periods like the original install did. Wireless interface is also a lot better.

I'm very happy with the install and I'll be sure to keep up with the updates.

Thanks for your help
Bruce
