Unhappy Mandriva pulls a blank with usb ports (again)

This seems to be a very common topic: THe USB ports don't work, nothing in them is registered as exsisting, but I have tried many of the techniques I have seen in other threads and I still have no sign of life from my 6 usb ports!

Here's what I have tried:

dmesg - USB controller: yes, usb anything else: no
tail - no response when I plug my flash drive in (or anything else...)
lsusb - nada
lspci - no usb devices
kudzu - not working even as root
/proc/bus/usb - no sub folders even
/mnt - 2 hard drives, 2 cd drives (correct)
service usb status - "usb loaded"
service usb start - all green, but no change in my system.
modprobe whatever - no change
/etc/fstab (add a line as requested) - no change

One thread mentioned BIOS, APCI, MCC: I, being a newbie and knowing ony high level programming (vb, some java) have no idea what these are/ where to finds them.

Once again, my distro is Mandriva 2005 LE (10.2) KDE not sure.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as my web, printer and flash drive are all usb (I am on a dual boot machine currently).

Do you have usb file system, usb devices enabled in your kernel?

Type "lsmod" in console and post the results.
