mandriva Limited Edition installation problem

Hello,

I have a compaq laptop with AMD Athlon 64 3200+ processor. I tried to install almost any distro of linux on it, but all of them had trouble with my CDROM. None of them seem to be able to access it, for some reason. I thought it might be because, they are all 32bit editions and can not run on 64bit processors.
So I downloaded Mandriva LE2005 and tried to install it, and everything went incredibly well until it got to the CDROM check part and then it stuck and said it can not access my CDROM (DVD recorder). The strange thing is that, it seemed to be reading the drive, because I could hear the CD spinning inside the drive but eventually i had no luck.

I have been using Linux for over 2 years now and I have Mandrake 10.1 on my desktop (AMD Athlon 32bit processor) with no problem.

Can anybody help me figure out the problem?

Thanks

You didn't mention that earlier!
If you believe the cause is cdrom, why not try to physicly remove cd drive and try booting. In laptop everything is detacheble. Try and see if the cause is really the one you think of
