mandriva

Had installed free mandrive on second hd. Windows found so I lost windows and mandriva. Have re-installed windows on 1st hd. Will install mandriva on 2nd hd, can I not put bootloader ie lilo or grub on 1st hd as can get to second hd from pop-up in bios. If this is possible good if not can I disconnect 1st hd and run mandriva on 2nd hd, reconnect 1st hd and then select which option from pop-up in bios. Any answers appreciated.

Don't disconnect your dirves during the Linux installation because this can cause problems later. Mandriva should detect the Windows and make an entry in its bootloader settings and you can choose whether to boot into Windows or Linux when your start your system.

mandriva

I thankyou reddazz for reply just clarify a little bit more please. If I select to boot into linux can I still get to windows as need windows at moment as only getting my head round linux at moment. Have found that twice I have put bootloader lilo or grub on windows 1st hd and windows finds and removes and then cannot get to linux or windows. If leave bootloader on 2nd hd with linux can I still get to windows, is my ? I am a little worried that all get messed up again.

If you install the bootloader (GRUB or LILO) on the MBR, you get a menu that shows which OSes you can boot into. You then have to select whether you want to boot into Linux or into Windows. There is no need for Windows to remove the bootloader you put on the MBR unless you reinstall Windows or reinstall the Windows bootloader.
