The problem that you are experiencing is that elements of the desktop are not able to load up. If you are trying to use GNOME or KDE, you do not have the minimum system requirements.

Try to install XFCE, Fvwm, PWM3, or ION3 one of these should be alternative to the GNOME or KDE in the package selection portion of the Mandriva installer.

Other than that, you can try a redhat version prior to version 7.

Good Luck.

Yes, that's probably what's going wrong, unmet system requirements. In order to run KDE or GNOME, you would need 256MB at the very least. Below that, it gets tricky. The alternative is to install a lightweight window manager, as suggested in the post above. This means you will get a rather bare desktop - none of the GNOME/KDE eye-candy you may have seen on the internet - but hey what other OS can you think of that will still run such a modest computer today?

Even with low RAM, it should attempt to load X, even if it would be ridiculously slow. If you're really using a 166MHz K6 though, don't expect to run any modern graphical environment on that. That's really inadequate. If you want to try to get graphics working anyway, try running 'startx' and take note of any errors that appear.

P.S. According to proper grammar rules, interrogative sentences are ended with question marks, not exclamation marks.

Thankyou all for the prompt information. I've actually got the Mandriva free 2007 booted now up with ( I think )by lowering the resolution to enable the desktop to load easier. It's all very slow and a bit different,I am now trying to set up the internet connection via my router using the information on this site. When I've done that I will try and install one of the lightweight desktops as suggested by usaf sp.I'm not to fussed about my grammar but noted sumguy231 remarks!!!!!, but glad you seem to have got the jest of my problem.

Thanks, again.
