Mandriva 2006 and BT Voyager/LAN
 

Thanks for all the help about partitions some months ago. Have now installed Mandriva 2006 successfully and all is wellish!

Problem: connecting to the internet!

I had a BT Voyager 105 ADSL modem which failed to provide a connection. Clearly I was not the first to discover this. I have replaced it, foolishly before doing further research, with Buffalo WLI-U2-KG54 and their ADSL router WMR-G54 which seems to face similar incompatibilities.

I have spent some time now on these tasks and am disappointed by the realisation that this is a big problem area, as the many threads have highlighted. So now back to Big Brother, for the time being. I shall be approaching BT and Buffalo to find out why they are not supporting their kit given the increasing numbers who are trying to migrate to Linux, or is this more a Linux shortcoming?

I can't say for certain. The BT Voyager 105 is wireless ? And USB ?

Some of the problems you're facing, are things like USB ADSL modems can be a complete PITA too set up. There are a few models that do have reasonably good support (the speedtouch ones do, but can still be a pain). The the wireless cards (internal or PCMCIA ones for laptops), well some of them do have drivers that can be configured, some of them have to be configured via ndiswrapper (which enables the user to use the windows driver - I believe), some can't be configured at all.

It's rather a case of digging around the various parts of the linux world to see what others have used and managed to get working.

Though it's also fair to remember that USB wasn't designed for networking - Ethernet was (specifically).

So I'm guessing that the devices that you want to use don't have proper native drivers so it's probably gonna be the case of checking into ndiswrapper to see if it can be used to make the windows driver work.

you checked http://eciadsl.flashtux.org/? there are linux drivers for bt voyagers. i have a 100 speedtouch which is supported. there are only a few distros that they offer the drivers for but im sure that one will be copmpatable anyway.
