Mandrake: wireless router problems; can't get Win95 slave drive to appear
 

I just recently got Mandrake 10.1 successfully installed on my computer, with KDE 3.1 (I believe) as a GUI. (Huzzah.) Anyway, I have two dilemmas double teaming me now:

1.) I can't get connected to the internet. All the computers in the house are on a wireless LAN, and the router I use to play online Xbox games (which claims to work with PCs as well; tis a Neatgear WGE 111 54 mbps Wireless Game Adapter- used both 802.11b and 802.11 g, if that helps) lights up as though working when I hook it up with an ethernet cable, but I still can't get to any websites. Any idears?

2.) I have Windows 95 on a slave drive. However, I can't seem to get it to boot in any way; neither hard drive seems to show up anywhere when I'm in Linux. (Though, I'm a total MacOS/Windows user, might I just be looking for icons in the wrong places?) "Home" contains only a welcome message and a link to my desktop, I don't see a C:/ drive or anything of that nature. I'd like to either be able to boot my Windows hard drive deperately from within linux, or choose which drive to boot from when I turn on the machine. Is it possible to do this from the option that comes up when Linux first starts, the one that says "linux windows etc."?

1.) have a google, i'm not sure on that front. Or have a look in the HCL if it is listed.

2.) there isn't a C drive 'cos linux doesn't have them, if its primary slave I guess it will be /dev/hda2 and probably can be found under /mnt or /media. As for the booting I don't know if lilo supports '95.

Mandrake 10.1 is old now, it might be worth updating to a newer version. Its called mandriva now.

You mean /dev/hdbx, surely (where x is a partition number)?. /dev/hda2 refers to the second partition on the first drive.

Also, the partition may not automatically be mounted and if that's the case, then for the mount point (e.g. /mnt/windows) would be empty.

mst3kman, just to clarify: do you want to be able to access your Windows drive from within Linux? It's a bit confusing when you say that you want to boot your drive from Linux and that you want to choose which drive to boot when you turn your machine on :/. If you want to run Windows from within Linux, I think you can with software like VMware.

Ah, yes, I meant I'd either like to boot from within Linux or just choose between hard drives when I boot the machine. Both because I have a bunch of Windows games I still wanna play and because the only way to configure the wireless thing is with software written for windows...

Wine can run windows programs on linux, but it can be tricky to get to work.
Cedega is a version of Wine designed for directX gameing (but costs)
CrossOver Office is a version of wine designed to run MS office and related stuff (but costs)

All can run games / office but with varying degrees of sucess. I can play Age of empires 2 with Cedega ok but not wine (not last time I tried anyhow)

HUZZAH. I have finally got my Linux system up and running; I'm officially a Mandrake user now. (I'm posting to this forum from my happy new linux box! Yee.) The CLI isn't too bad for me 'cause I'm used to OS X, but now I never have to engage in another life or death struggle with windoze again.

AND. Thank you for reminding me... a friend mentioned that WIne thing a while ago but I forgot all about it... mayhaps that will make it so I don't even need to boot windows anymore...

Or you could have a look around for programs that can do the same, and often more, for linux.
