mandrake update can't contact mirror?

i went to use mandrake update. however it told me i needed to enable a mirror for it to access. so i found a list of ftp mirrors on the net. punched it in. it would say that it's downloading hdlist1 or hdlist 2. but never make any progress.

i get an error at the end

UNABLE TO UPDATE MEDIUM; IT WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE DISABLED

errors:

retrieve of source hdlist (or synthesis) failed
no hdlist found for medium
problem reading synthes file of medium
