Mandrake Sound - Static, fading to no noise on VIA AC97

Sorry for all the questions everyone, but I've got another. When I boot up Mandrake (KDE) the sound works OK for a second or so then goes to static. After the start-up sound, my sound card won't put anything out. It's definetly the Linux drivers. I have a VIA AC97 with the default Linux setup (ArtS). Any ideas?

Arts ARGHHH!!!

Yea, make your own kernel. Get the source and configure it to support the VIA *** audio codec and anything with AC in it. Its easy, then once ur kernel is installed, configured and working, turn off arts, it will work fine

Are u using the onboard one that comes with Albatron Mobo's?

You can also check out http://www.opensound.com/ they have a whole lota drivers for sound cards..

Sorta. It's the onboard for the Gigabyte brand of motherboards. How do I configure my kernel?

Well configuring ur own kernel is a bit of a mission but its great to do as a beginner, you learn heaps about your computer... even if it dosnt work for you (and you will be lucky if it works first time).

There are many manuals on the internet (google is you friend) and I am not about to even start to explain it here, i will be here for an hour.

Dont let that scare you off... give it a go, ur computer will run heaps better with only the things _you_ want it to have.

Gotta fly

Contant me @ dbaker@student.bond.edu.au if u have any problems, i should be able to halp.
Dave.

Any1 out there know of a good kernel configuration mini-howto?

Have you tried opening the Mandrake Control Centre, Hardware. select sound card, then run config tool. It should allow you to select alternative drivers. Try each one in turn, log out, and back in again. Hopefully one will work. I had this problem on an ECSK7 board, and choosing a different driver sorted it out.
