Mandrake LILO - Multiboot

Hi

I have the followign config on my machine:
Hardrive 1
- Win98
- Win 2K Server
- Win Xp

Hardrive 2
- Mandrake 9.1

I have a problem when I use the the Mandrake boot thing to choose WinXP. It says "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: HAL.DLL. Please re-install a copy of the above file". I can't even get into the system so heaven only knows how I could re-install another copy.

I can get into Mandrake, WIn98, Win 2K. When I got into Win2K I tried to get into the WINXP windows directory but it says something about 'invalid page operation' or somethign to that extent.

I have done some reading on the the 'HAL.dll' problem and the solutions range from using the Win Xp Recovery Console to formatting the hardrive which has the XP partition.

Now if I was to format the WinXP partition (keep the Wion 98 and Win2K partitions as they still work) and reinstall WINXP do I need to reinstall Mandrake again?? Won't I loose my LILO boot thing if I install WINXP? How would I get it back?

Any help on this will be appreciated. Anyone else have any probs with "hal.dll' ??

There doesn't appear to be anything much constructive about "Hal.dll' problems around on the web.

The important thing is where is lilo located. If it in hdd2 then you can do as you wish. However if it is on hdd1 then you have to create a boot disk and/or have the installation cd's to reinstall lilo, as XP installation will over-write the MBR.

And you don't need to reinstall Mandrake .

Thanks for the reponse UltimaGuy.

Its on hdd1 unfortunately.

What do I do after installing XP? You have mentioned the boot disk or install disk (mandrake I presume) but what do I type to get the LILO going?

Thanks

Just pop in the first installation cd and go into rescue mode. Then type /sbin/lilo to re-install your lilo .

Oh, and don't forget to mount your partitions and change root in rescue mode. In RH, it will be automatically mounted under /mnt/sysimage and you have to do
chroot /mnt/sysimage
and then reinstall lilo .
