Mandrake cannot find my gcc

I have tried running/installing/whatever it's called several binary files via the terminal. On each try I get a message that says "there is no gcc" "cannot find " "incompatible gcc" or something similar. What exaclty is a gcc and where do I go about finding a compatible one?

gcc is the GNU C compiler, you should be able to find Mandrake packages for it under development. What are the binary programs you are you trying to run?
