Mandrake : Cable problems

I'm totally new in the field of Linux, and just installed Mandrake 9.1 on a ext2 partition blabla, next to my FAT32 file / windows partitions. I booted linux without problems, but when I tried to make a connection with the internet it failed completely.

specs :
2 ethernet cards (eth0 / eth1 ?)
Cable (telenet - Belgium)
proxy.pandora.be port 8080
auto script: pac.pandora.be:8080

I tried to fill in these properties in the browser but that failed miserably :p. Every time the connection attempt failed.

I've already posted this at the distro forum, but I didn't quite get the response I wanted ;p

gavinayling 07-06-2003 06:54 AM

How exactly did it fail? Can you access any sites at all?

TsuNamI 07-06-2003 07:39 AM

I just can't access the net, it's just like the ethernet cards aren't installed or badly configured.

gavinayling 07-06-2003 08:01 AM

What happens if you type "netstat" at the terminal?

TsuNamI 07-07-2003 06:32 AM

At the startup I get :
ACPI daemon [FAILED]
Don't know whether this is crucial to my system or not :p

Bringing up interface eth0 and eth1 takes a long time, then it sends 4 probes, blabla, claims IP address

TsuNamI 07-07-2003 10:30 AM

*bump* anyone?

tcaptain 07-07-2003 10:33 AM

Well ACPI has to do with powermanagement so I don't think its causing this problem.

What does ifconfig tell you? does it give you info on eth0?
if you only get info on 'lo' then your NIC is not up, which narrows it down a bit.

angelrod 07-07-2003 10:40 AM

Why do you have two NIC's?? are you sharing your internet connection on a LAN?

Does you cable company gives you an IP by DHCP? If yes, is the NIC that is connected to the cable modem configured to get an IP by DHCP?

TsuNamI 07-07-2003 10:45 AM

yep, the second nic is for internetsharing in LAN. (older pc, running win98). checking ifconfig...

DHCP?
We get an ip every time we reboot (or something like that). I thought I set my NIC to auto-receive IP

Have you tried configuring it through the Mandrake Control Centre?

If you set up which every network card the cable modem is plugged into to use dhcp it should work fine.

Dizzy

angelrod 07-07-2003 11:41 AM

I think that you're not getting an IP from your ISP. Try:

netconfig -d ethX

change X for the number of NIC that is connected to the cable modem

After that type:

ifdown ethX
ifup ethX

That's to renew you IP info from ISP

xodustrance 07-07-2003 11:51 AM

Tsunami, angelrod was hitting something there. Is your cable provider dhcp? Almost all residential cable services in the United states do, so if you are in the US, you are dhcp unless youve got a buisness static ip. Dynamic IP, changes every so often, or atleast its supposed too, some people have had theres for over a year. - Point being,no way it will connect on earth if you dont set your card to obtaining that info automatically.

yep, I did this. I had another try : set the first nic at DHCP and the other at Static with 192.168.0.1 (could be wrong, not really important at the moment) et cetera. Now, from this moment on everything went reeeaaaal slow. But, really, slow :p I tried to reboot, and the Bringing up interface eth0 / eth1 wasn't slow anymore. The probing part was skipped (h00ray). Still, I couldn't connect. I tried filling out the proxy server again and again (I know myself :p errors are being made all the time). I gave up, rebooted in winXP, discovered that my inet was down. At this point Maybe Linux that changed the ip of my modem ... blah. Disconnected modem, rebooted pc and winXP inet worked.

I'll try those commands to refresh the ip later on. Does anyone have any idea why Mandrake is suddenly so slow?
