Mandrake 9 Video Config

There were a few similar cases to mine in the forum ... but after reading them I was still confused.

I'm trying to install Mandrake 9.0 on a comp with geforce 3 graphics card and a viewsonic vg171b 17in lcd monitor...but for some reason I can't get the video configuration to work. I get a thin gray line...then blank blackness for 5 seconds. On other modes/configurations I get a blur of color that just keeps scrolling diagonally. I've tried inputting custom monitor horizontal and vertical refresh rates (the ranges I used were directly off viewsonic's webpage for my monitor) and it still didn't work. What's odd is my monitor isn't listed under the "vendor" list of monitors...even though the vg181 and 151 are listed. I've tried everything I know how to do so far...so if someone could please help me.

Thanks

are you talking about the Xserver?

is this problem related to the entire display or just to video playback?

It's related to the entire display...the graphical user interface won't display at all after I start linux...even though there's some sound which I assume is the startup sound.

I've had similar problems with unsupported graphics chips.
At one point I was switching the machine off and putting an old ATI card in for Linux.

Did you try all possibilities in the Xconfig part of setup ?
If not, rebbot from cd and choose upgrade, and when you get back to that point try lots of combinations.

Other than that you need someone with more knowledge than i currently have...

good luck
