Unhappy Mandrake 9.2 gui not working





Help, I can't get a graphical interface to work! mandrake 9.2 I have tried it on 3 systems, currently I am trying it on a Dell (that was running XP but I put in a different harddrive for this) I have a nvidia geforce 2 and a dell m991 monitor. I have tried using XFdrake and everytime I say "TEST" it just gives me a black screen until I hit alt-f1. same thing when I power up, it just gives me a black screen until I hit alt-F1 and then I can login as command line.

Does it give you a blank screen and nothing, or a blank screen and after a few seconds clicks (or flips between the command line and then back), and tries it again? If it does the second thing, then let it do it a few times. You should get an error message and an option to see the log files. The other option is to go into the X-windows log files and look for yourself, then post anything you find. These are in the /var/log directory or a subdirectory under /var/log.

It gives me a blank screen , then nothing until I hit alt-f1, it does not seem to try clicking between anything. I have let it sit for several minutes in the past and still got only the blank screen. below is the log.

Just for grins and to see if it will work at all try this:

At a command prompt type xf86config , and when you go through to set up your X server for your monitor select "vesa", It is at the top of the list on the left side that lists the brand names. Select the rest of the options like you normally do and then when its done and creates your XF86Config file then startx and tell us what happens. This should give you the minimal monitor settings to get you a working gui that you can tweak from there.

I don't understand why it is saying "screen not found" obviously it knows the screen is here because I am using it when I config the file!

Edit the XF86Config file and uncomment (remove #'s) on the lines for Load "glx" and Load "xtt" and Load "freetype".

It appears you have selected to use 8 bit color depth as default, with a GeForce2 you should be able to use at least the 16 bit with no problems, so let's change this part next:

Change the line that says Default depth 8 to 16 and take out the 1280x1024 mode for now. Make sure when you are done editing it that you overwrite the current file with this new one. You may want to reboot your computer and see if it works and if not post the error messages and we'll continue troubleshooting.

Or you could just try xf86config with different values for your default depth and resolution size.

Okay, its hard to try to help you if you don't post what all you did to get the error message you got.

I take it you are getting to a command prompt? If so then login as user and post what the full error is when you type "startx" (without the quotes). Have you tried typing in xf86config and going through the setup again with more generic choices??

Let's see what your XF86Config file looks like after you do this if it still doesn't work.

I tried all the things you said before, I will post the new XFconfig file that was created and the log file after the failure. I looked through the log file, everything looked okay except for the error message that showed up on my terminal (given above, the two XINIT errors): btw, I appreciate your repeated posts Rberry!, thanx!

Okay, I see that you are now using 16 bit color depth by default but only at 640x480, you should start at 800x600 and work up from there. The section about fonts only shows that you are allowing to types of fonts which might hamper X from displaying alot of stuff. You can uncomment (remove #'s) from the front of the fonts lines (all except for the two that say "unscaled").

Next we need to know exactly what kind (brand & model) of videocard you have in your machine. I have never had any luck with VGA drivers myself.

I'll post a copy of my XF86Config file in a little bit so you can see what I'm talking about regarding using generic items.

Here are the important parts of my XF86Config file. I have a Samsung Syncmaster TFT LCD 17" monitor that isn't a selectable choice in X so I chose the closest thing that matched my settings that wasn't brand specific. I also have a ATI Radeon 9600 Pro videocard and this is the best way I found of setting it up without getting too involved as long as it worked fine, and I can play TuxRacer at full so speed so it suits me just fine.
