Mandrake 9.2 Kernel Source RPM Weirdness

Can someone please help me understand this:

[root@localhost cdrom]# ls
kernel-* ndiswrapper-0.6.tar.gz*
[root@localhost cdrom]# rpm -V ./kernel-
package ./kernel- is not installed
[root@localhost cdrom]# rpm -Uvh ./kernel-
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
package kernel- is already installed
[root@localhost cdrom]#

Immediately after a fresh install of Mandrake 9.2, I'm trying to install the kernel source. It's not listed by rpmdrake in the RPMs on the 3 CDs I downloaded. I ran uname -a to get the kernel version, and checked Mandrake's web site to get the right RPM to download, which is kernel-, from what I can tell.

When I run rpm -V ./kernel- , it says the package is not installed.

When I run rpm -Uvh ./kernel- , it says the package is already installed.

I searched the existing posts, and found nothing except other people with the same problem.

what you have is a precompiled binary kernel package.

look for kernel-source*.rpm's or something like kernel-2.4.22*.src.rpm.

focusing on the "kernel-source" or "*src.i386.rpm" .

Thanks for pointing that out (duh).

I guess the contradictory messages from rpm are just a personality quirk. A helpful one in this case, since I'm sure I would have blown the install otherwise. )

Thanks Again,

do not put .rpm with rpm -q

use rpm -q package name, in your case:
rpm -q kernel-
or maybe
rpm -q kernel-
but not
rpm -q kernel-
