Unhappy Mandrake 9.2 installation freeze. PLEASE HELP!

New to Linux. Trying to install Mandrake 9.2 (2.4.22- 10mdk). Process freezes when attempting to find Adaptec 2940U2/W SCSI controller driver. I know there are issues with aic7xxx drivers but i dont now how to fix or repair drivers or kernel. Any help is extremely appreciated.

I'm having a similar problem:

I am attempting to install "Discovering Linux" (9.2) on a Compaq Presario 5630 (PII, 128MB, new 60GB Hitachi hard drive, Adaptec disk controller on motherboard). When I start the installation disk 1, I immediately get an error message: insmoding module at aic7xxx failed at /usr/bin/perl-install/modules.pm line 408

After hitting "OK" the installation goes ahead for a bit, but then comes back with another error message and bug report:
* cannot open shell - /tmp/sh doesn’t exist
* loading modules dependencies
* PCMCIA: probing PCI bus..
not found
* PCIMCIA: probing for Intel PCIC (ISA)

succeeded usb-storage
* have insmod usbkbd
* needs input
* needs usbkbd
succeeded usbkbd
* have to insmod keybdev

succeeded keybdev

After installation is complete, the system refuses to boot.
