i'm trying to switch to Linux after getting another HD in my comp. I d/l mandrake 9.2. but after installing, the Xserver won't start. I tried using all 3 radeon drivers (are they drivers, it let me choose in setup), but everytime the xserver won't start cause of my video card (radeon 9600pro) and so i'm stuck with a command prompt. Any ideas?
Distribution: Fedora Core 1, Mandrake 9.2, Windows BSOD, Windows GPF, Windows Fatal Exception.

Wow!
That might be the same stupid problem I'm having with Mandrake 9.2 and my retail ATI Radeon 9600se. I've spent the last three days poreing over a 24 page install guide for their stupid VIDEO DRIVER!!!! 24 pages! It's just a stupid video card! I am so new it hurts, but I wonder if we aren't sharing the same problem. You'd think the ATI people would know about this by now. The symptom I get when installing Mandrake is it keeps having "error reading package. . ." during install. I get 23 to 40 errors. The GUI absolutely won't load. The errors are different on each install, and each error is in itself, different.
I had been using Mandrake since 8.0on my old PC but MDK 9.2 refused to install and run on
my new computer with the ATI 9600 card. No matter what. I gave up on it.
As a Linux alternative I purchased and installed Xandros 2.0 which installed and runs great.
Seems to have good ATI video support and as it turns out, I like Xandros better than
Mandrake.
I guess that's the 'fix'....
No problem with video or graphics support at all.
Not to flame Mandrake, but how could they release a product that
won't support a seemingly popular video card is beyond me.
Yah, I had the same problem. I have been spending quite some time over the past week or so trying to fix. It's quite involved. The best I have been able to do is load a VESA driver using the following instructions which will allow the xserver to load. However, not a real solution.
1. delete XF86config-4 file
rm /etc/X11/XF86config-4 <enter>
2. run video config
XFdrake <enter>
3. move to the very bottom of the list XFree 4
select the 'vesa' option
4. start xserver
startx
If someone does come across a better solution please post.
