Unhappy Mandrake 9.2 & windows xp boot problem

I have installed Windows XP on a 60 g hard drive as master and Mandrake 9.2 on a 40 g hard drive as slave. I have tried to get Linux to boot but it will not.
I have tried to install it 3 times. I changed from lilo to grub thinking it may help but when I boot up I get a screen showing Grub Version 0.93 and to tab for possible commands. Since I know next to nothing about the commands I tried to fine kde hoping to get to the gui desktop. That did not happen so I did the only other command I knew which was reboot. I read several posts on various forums but I still can not get it. I thought it was suppose to be easier than this to install. I want to learn Linux but I only am able to get to Win XP. I will not give up but I need HELP!!.

when you install Linux where do you tell it to install Lilo/grub?

I install it to the MBR (master boot record) and have never had any problems

mandrake 9.2 & win xp boot up

I could not tell you where I installed the bootloader. I pretty much just clicked next and followed the prompts.

you have to set up grub/lilo on the master and use grub/lilo to choose your os. it will give you a choice to boot dos(windows xp) or your linux kernel. when you go through the setup process it should ask you what drive you want the mbr to go to. put it on the master and set it up to be the default mbr. cause linux mbr can read dos instalations.
