I have just installed Mandrake 9.2 on a Sony Vaio PCG-FX501... it is absolutely SPLENDID!!
Here i am connected to the internet, downloading my mail and checking out news, using my docs on a Windows 2000 server, listening to my favourite internet radio, and using my new "el-cheapo" logitech USB mouse, looking forward to a DVD... Hannibal!
Just a big thank you for all the people in this forum, I have learned a lot from you on how to do make those things which did not work out of the box well work
My next tasks? Use a wireless intel card, test the firewire connection using my videocamera, and set up my webcam to use gnomemeeting and make the function keys work (sonyxi [sic]??)
A few tips for those with the same type of laptop, they worked for me, but I cannot say if it might work for you:

My USB mouse did not work, all I had to do was put quotation marks in etc/X11/XF86Config, where it says:
ZAxisMapping "4 5" <<< ----here<<-----
