Mandrake 9.1: Various questions

Hi! I have just installed MD9.1...and now I have some questions for all of you! :)

Question 1) Installing Nvidia drivers.

I've picked the right drivers (IA32), installed them with using the sh command wiht no problems...unfortunately all I get as a result of editing the XF86Config file is...you guessed it: A black screen. I have checked that the kernel and the version of XFree is recent enough, and I have made sure to install the kernel modutils package. Looking at the bottom of the log file, I can easily see that 'something' is wrong, but I don't know why or what it exactly means.

My GPU is a Geforce3 Ti200 btw...

Config- and log file below for your viewing pleasure.

Question 2) Where should one install non-rpm programs to?

Question 3) How come some non-menu text in browsers such as Mozilla and Konqueror appear not to be anti-aliased?

Question 4) Having come from a Windows XP environment, I am curious to know how one starts a program as a 'service'...or whatever the Linux equivalent is called...

youngstorm 08-18-2003 05:34 PM

?1. I don't know.
?2. /usr/local/ is a good place for that. Also /opt is good.
?3. I don't know.
?4. In the menus, go to "Configure", go to "Boot and Init",
click on "SysV-Init Editor". Be sure to read the help if you don't already
know how it works.

Sorry I could not be of more help.

foxbat 08-18-2003 06:17 PM

Don't be sorry, every bit helps!

Another question - this time in the networking department.
I have to connect to the internet using a NIC with a certain MAC address (nothing I can do to change that), and therefore I have added this line to my ifcfg-eth0 file:
MACADDR="00:30:4f:06:b1:db"
This works...sort of.
When I reboot, it simply refuses to connect to the web, acting as if eth0 is down, when in fact it is up.

The temporary solution for this, is to manually shutdown eth0 and then start it up again...then it works fine.
Any clue as to what is going on??

Onthefly 08-29-2003 07:23 AM

Hello foxbat,

if i got it correct you took the driver from nvidia and installed it with the sh command file. Then you have to change the Driver statement in the XFconfig file to simple nv, else you still use the mandrake nvidia driver. That should work.

To 2) /usr/local/ or /usr/bin/ or theoretical whereever you want.
To3) I guess they are optimised for explorer or you have not the valid type font or I do not know
To4) I do not know XP well, I prefered 2000. But you can open shell or Run command and type in the program name and run the program. If it is not in the $path, then you have to give the full directory name like /usr/local/newbie/newbie
I hope this is what XP understand under service.
5) No clue. But you can change to manual startup instead of starting by booting. Then you save the shutdown.
Cheers
