Mandrake 9.1, su problems

Hi, first post here, so be gentle with me. Installed MDK 9.1, no problems:) even managed to install my speedtouch modem with little hassle and get Opera up and running, but then I started to run into problems.
1. I somehow lost the login screen for Root, can only log in as user. I have tried to rectify this in the control center in settings there but it does not seem to save the settings as I leave. Only have OK or cancel in the bottom, no save. Is this correct?
Think the option I am changing from default to yes is allow Root login
2.Ldm_Validate_Partition failed, have absolutely no clue what this means, but it was there before when things were running fine.
3. A friend of mine told me to try "ctrl+alt+f3", login as root and then "startx -- :l" which should have brought me in as root in graphic mode, do not work and I get something along the lines cannot start because already running 0.

Additional info. Running a dual boot with Xp Pro and MDK9.1
Mandrake is on hda 7,8,9, where 8 is the main.

Hi !

For your login problem, did you go to K>Configuration>Others>Users Conf ?
Does the /home/<your id> directory still exist? (it shows if your user session hasn't been removed)
Before your problem happened, did you make visible the root account at login ?

See you

vic

Long life to Linux !

Hi lwtvh

To enable you to log on as root in Mandrake 9.1 do

1) K (bottom left)

2) Configuration

3) Control center (the KDE one - not the Mandrake one)

4) System -

5) Login manager –

6) Click the Administrator Mode button at the bottom -

7) Type your Mandrake ROOT password

8) Click on the USERS tab then uncheck the cross by the word root in the central hidden users section - click on apply

Then just log out - then log in again and youll see a root icon - just clcik on it and type in your root password then your in as root for that session!

Just wanted to say thanks to those that wrote back to help me. Thanks.
Anyway, I am writing this in Opera under Mandrake. Life is GOOD :-)
Then it is time to check for anti virus software and how to set up a soft firewall. Think I will do that under a new thread unless I am able to google my way to Howto's and other reference material.
Wish me luck, and yeah, have fun everybody.

Problems with speedtouch USB and 9.1

You said that you had little hassle installing the Speedtouch USB with 9.1

I have just upgraded to 9.1 and my USB Speedtouch modem no longer works. Each time I reboot, it hangs after saying 'Starting Internet connections'

I've uploaded the microcode (the windows version) and updated /etc/speedtouch.conf but I can't seem to get it to work.

Did it just 'work' for you ?

Try turning the Internet service off (set it to not start at boot) in the MCC (leave the Network one on).

Hi, what I did was download "Speedmgmt.tar.gz", you can google your way to that one, also think it is at Sourceforge.com/org, never remember on that one.
Where you find the file you will also find instructions on how to use it. You just copy the one file mentioned and run the wizard and away you go:)
