Mandrake 9.1 is slow booting?
 

Hi guys! Thanks for all your help last time....


I installed the latest Mandrake 9.1 distro on my 'puter about 3 weeks ago, and I'm gradually getting to grips with it - I've managed to get Samba running, printer sharing, etc. (still haven't figured out ICS, but I'll get there) and I'm generally happy to use Linux from this day forth - but is it normal for Linux to boot into the KDE desktop in 30+ minutes?!?!

My system is:

AMD 1700XP processor
512mb DDRRAM
40GBHD for windoze XP, and a 10GBHD for Linux
VIA chipset mainboard

sorry d00d i had to let that out....that is insane 30 + MINUTES???
is that an overexageration or does it really take that long....and i assume if it really is taking somewhat around this amount of time that you can see what it is hanging up on in the boot screen.. or does everything get the "OK" and when its loading the gui it is taking this long?
and by any chance to you use an nvidia gfx card? if so i think i may have a fix for you if this is the case, just post the answers to my questions and we'll go from there..

It's no exaggeration.

Nothing seems to hang on bootup, no [FAILED] messages or anything - but yes, I'm using a 32MB TNT NVidia graphics card. Is that a problem?

yes it is the problem ONLY if you have the nvidia drivers installed supplied from www.nvidia.com

I haven't messed with it at all, It's got the same drivers that were installed with the Mandrake 9,1 distro

Update - Just checked MCC, the vendor's name *is* Nvidia corporation

hrmm i am not sure then, i know when you use the nvidia drivers and it takes forever to bootup all you do is add this:
Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "DFP, TV"
to the Device Section in your XF86Config-4 file (just under where is states the Driver) and the problem goes away....
i don't think this will work if you are using the "nv" driver but hell it won't break anything if you try it...it may work but i am unsure about if it will.

Nope. :-( still talking about 40 minutes to boot. I'm wondering if it's the HD or the BIOS. Linux itself seems to be running OK, just slowly.

Do you have any USB devices attached while booting? If so, have only essential USB devices (keyboard, mouse) attached while booting, and see if that makes a difference. Mandrake have a note on their website (Errata) about a slow installation being caused by having USB devices attached. Worth a go.

Also, are you on a network? I had a situation a while ago where my computer was setup to be the dhcp host (automatic network addressing) but if my housemate's computer was on first, his was the dhcp host and mine would hang for about 20mins until it gave up and disabled networking.
