Mandrake 9.1 - Installation crash
 

Hey

I'm having some troubles installing mandrake 9.1, it seems to randomly crash on me.

I wasn't sure where to post this, because I’m not sure if it’s a software or hardware issue, but I am a noob so this was the safest place.

I don't think it the CD's (though it’s possible it is) because the crash doesn't seem to happen at the same place. The furthest I’ve gotten is to the disk drake partition screen, which is where it’s currently frozen at the moment.

I started out with a USB mouse and keyboard, but after the mouse stopped moving and it crashed the first few times, I switched back to PS/2.

I'm not really sure what to do now... I’ve installed Mandrake once before (version 9) and the whole thing installed without a hitch, so I’m a bit confused as to why it’s being crashy now.

I've never tested the CD's before so maybe they were corrupted when I copied them.

The only other note is I recently installed a Novell server on a separate drive, which is now set as the master. I only mention it because someone posted about having similar problems until they changed the drive they were installing to master.

Does it really matter if the drive I'm installing to is a slave?

It should only matter for the boot loader. I mean, you could have some trouble after the installation is over and you reboot your machine (because of wrong boot loader installation options--> that's why you always should create the rescue disk), but not within the install itself.

Can you post the specs of your hardware ?

I'm far from an expert, but here are some suggestions/hints based upon my experience:

--I didn't install Linux on my master hard drive, and still managed to complete the process. However, I did have freezes in my installation at various times and places. I fixed my problem by installing from my master CD drive.

So, my question is, do you have two CD drives like me? If you do, try installing from the master CD drive. I know it seems rather bizzarre that it would matter whether the CD drive you're using is slave or master, but it worked for me.

--Also, it is important what hardware you are using. During my initial attempt at installing Linux I used a computer with too slow of processor and too little ram for handling Mandrake Linux. This problem also caused my install to crash/freeze.

--Last, any of the gurus around here will want you to check summ your iso files. You should be able to find instructions for doing this via a search of the forum.
