Mandrake 9.0 email and web browser
 

I have recently reinstalled Mandrake 9.0 due to not happy with the origional install.
I successfully got Kmail and the web browser setup and working. After feeling I had a successful day I turned the system off.
Next morning I turned the system on to check emails and got a message saying it did not reconize my mail host "mail.bigpond. com". I then tried the web browser and got a message that it did not reconize the address I put in (google's address) or any other address I put in. I checked all the setting and all were as previous day. It does however connect to the web server (bigpond)
Any help would be appreciated.

I'm no expert myself but I'm willing to try to help. From what you say you can connect to your ISP via pppd. However you get errors to the effect that it cannot recognise (it really means find) the addresses you enter in the web browser. This is DNS lookup error (Domain Name Service). When you enter a web address it has to go find the IP number for that address (e.g 212.243.111.12). It does this by querying special DNS computers on the net, but it has to know where to find them. They are normally computers on your ISP network. When you connect via pppd entries should be added to the file '/etc/resolve.conf'. Take a look at this file before and after you connect to the net and see that new entries for 'nameserver' get added. Also see if you have an entry of 'nameserver 0.0.0.0', if not add it, it means DNS servers are to be found on the default gateway.

I'm no expert either, but I run Mandrake 9.0, and my internet connection (I use Mozilla as the browser) has worked fine out of the box every time I install. So my question would be what did you have to do to get it working, and do those things save for each reboot? Your "/etc/resolv.conf" file should have something like this.

nameserver 208.180.1.69
nameserver 208.180.118.2
search cox-internet.com

the nameserver IP addresses if not automaticaly detected can be provided by your ISP (bigpond?)
