I tried the Connection Sharing wizard of Mandrake 8.2, and i istantly got an Internet connection for my XP machines.
The only problem was that i had to manually enter the DNS ip's on the clients.
So, more or less, the Control Center worked.
Now i just installed Mandrake 9.0 for the 4th time, and as before i don't get a working Internet connection for my Win computers.
Not even the IP!
DHCP is not working!
I browsed the docs on Mandrake Web site, and i found that the Control Center should also have a "server" entry, to manage server services like DHCP, DNS, Samba and so on.
The document stated that the Server config would be available only after installing "WizDrake" package, but i could not find such RPM on my 3 cd's.
So the automatic configuration don't work, and there is no choice for tuning the Server settings from Control Center...
Ip_Forwarding is enabled, and i manually changed to ACCEPT every entry the "policy" config file of Shorewall.
There apparently is no communication at alla between the Linux box and the rest of the LAN.
I uninstalled Bind, Caching Nameserver and Shorewall (that are installed by the Control Panel's "Connection Sharing" wizard, but to no avail.
After long time, i gave up and disabled eth1 (connected to a fiberchannel HAG), and tried to use the old Linux box based on MDK 8.2...but i could not get the address from DHCP nor access the Internet with a static IP.
The old box is 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0, and all the XP machines work very well with it, but the MDK 9.0 machine is apparently cut out from the network.
Strangely the wizard didn't allow me to choose a 192.168.01 address, defaulting to 192.168.1.1.
Of course the two Linux boxes were NEVER connected to the switch at the same time.

I don't know what happened to Wizdrake, but I can't seem to even find it available for download anywhere... try Webmin, www.webmin.com.

I reinstalled everything, with "expert" setting, and with most of the packages group (except games and scientific).
After install i DID NOT use the Connection Sharing wizard, but enabled it by hand (with the well know script rc.firewall-2.4 available on the Web from many sources).
I just did it, and i had no time to test the new config...but there still is the same apparent problem.
On Mandrake site and on the docs on the cd, the Control Center is show with a "Server" tab, that should be used to configure the most common server services/apps, like Samba, DHCP, and so on.
I would like to have the Server option on my Control Panel, but i don't know how to do it.
Probably there should be somewhere some configuration file that
controls the behaviour of the Control Panel...but i couldn't figure out which is.

Anybody's got a clue?

Yes....

go to the Mandrake control panel and then to add/remove software or package manager.
Then search for "wizard" or "wizardlibs" then install the only returned package,now close the control panel and open up a new one and look to the left and you will see the servers config option

I just ran through a mandrake 9.0 config for ICS and could not get it to work right testing on several different machines (using the control panel)

It seems to configure the connection sharing correctly, after 10 goes at it all be it with a firewall with out choice(shorewall).

However if you now configure the security setting, after you have the computers set via DHCP and working online, and enable Internet access to your machine from the web be it just a web-service or all services Mandrake will then disable all Internet connection sharing.

I have been through the whole set up numerous times and also looked the the config scripts to try to override this but could not get it to go without reprogramming the hole of shore-wall or playing ip chains and tables for the next 2 weeks.

I hope someone can use this as reference or maybe post a solution that is simple and will work.

Webmin is gone once you enable ICS on mandrake 9.0 pointless --webmin is for Web administration dam it,

I think what your looking for is drakwizard. I went to the package installer, rpmdrake, I think, and did a search on wiz and that is what it returned. When it installed it asked for disk 1.

Hopefully this will help me solve one of my problems.

im kinda havin the same problem except its the opposite. my ics is runnning on my win xp box as workgroup 'mshome' wat i need to kno is how to set it up on my madrake 8.1 to access the ics. thanks

I had the same problem and found out the possible cause(s), which when removed fixed the problem:

1. Another firewall, Bastille, from previous Mandrake 8.2 linux was installed and causing a conflict with shorewall.

Search for its startup script ("bastille") at /etc/init.d/

and also:

rpm -qa | grep Bastille

Uninstall all the Bastille-* packages.

2. The drakgw wizard should not automatically configure the interface. Choose "manual/experts only" option and set manually the interfaces. In my case they were:

eth1 address: 192.168.0.1
LAN address 192.168.0.0
DNS / Gateway: 192.168.1.1 (adsl modem)

Also: check for (and remove) duplicate eth1 entries in /etc/shorewall/interfaces and at /etc/sysconfig/dhcp

Have you checked if Bastille is still installed, and removed it?

Please have a look at the last message I posted (just above your message) and check if the 3 steps I describe work for you (uninstall Bastille, reconfigure ICS in manual / expert mode, and correct duplicate entries in the file /etc/shorewall/interfaces and /etc/sysconfig/dhcp)

Yes, it's the first thing I did after reading it. I can't find Bastille, so I guess it's not there. I did the ICS several times, manually, that didn't help either. It looks like I've got some kind of conflict that Mandrake 8.0 never had.
There were no duplicate entries in interfaces, although it said something weird (like it swithced the loc and net around and said my local adapter was masq) and I removed all duplicates in dhcp, there's only eth1 in it now, which is the cable modem.

Still no result.

I also found the Drakwizard described above, and it looks pretty nice, but everytime I select web, it complains dhcp has already been setup and might give a conflict, and when I select dhcp it also said dhcp is already setup, and only gives me the 'ready' button for an option. Can't even change my settings there anymore....

I am a newbie who just got Mandrake 9 up and werking. I figured out how to fix the problem of the missing wizdrake package. Just go to this page and DL the package and the server icon will appear in your Madrake COntrol Panel:

rpmfind.net and search for drakwizard-0.2-13mdk.noarch.rpm

drakwizard-0.2-13mdk.noarch.rpm is the real name of the package NOT wizdrake. The mANDRAKE 9 documentation MADE A typo. After Yoiu install the godamn package than you close mandrake control center and open it back up and the server icon will be there server configutation and you can run the wizards to install samba and DNS and DHCP and all that good stuph.

It werked for me. And it will werk for you too.
