Before I start, I have to say that I am very impressed by how Linux has evolved in the past couple of years (from a windows user, Linux newbee point of view). My last Linux attempt dated back to Redhat 5.2 (for which I payed!) and I was thoughroughly dissapointed. I installed Mandrake 8 a couple of days ago and I couldn't believe my eyes. Almost everything worked right from the start, including printer, soundcard, videocard, the works! And the interfaces (KDE & Gnome) actually work better than windows...

Now, on to my problem:

I have a PC hooked up to my TV and ADSL modem, which I use as a DVD/ DiVX player, surf station, MP3 server and for internet connection sharing. It's running Win2K & Sygate 4, with DHCP server enabled (192.168.0.1, subnet 255.255.255.0). This machine is hooked up to a hub in which I plugged another Win2K machine, a Win98 machine and a Mac. All the clients are configured to get their IP automatically via DHCP, and all work fine. On the client Win2K machine I am dual booting with Linux Mandrake 8. In Linux I have my ethernet card recognised automatically and correctly as a Realtek PCI ethernet card. I have installed both DHCP RPMs using the software installation tool. Ifconfig reports a lo and eth0 card. In Drakconf I've tried several times to get internet going without success. I'm using the following settings:

IP: empty
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
dhcp enabled

Host: rudeboy (that's the name of the comp. What should I put in there? my ADSL provider is wanadoo.fr)
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
interface: eth0
DNS: empty

I've tried several other settings and host names without success. When I click on the connect icon I can see that the comp is sending and receiving data (at about 2K/s) but it cannot connect to the internet. Also, after I restart the network in DrakConf, in the list of ethernet adaptors I can see eth0, but there is no IP information (ie it does not get an IP address from the server).

What am I doing wrong? Should I use NetConf to configure my internet connection? Do I have to fill in a DNS? What do I enter in the Host field? Thanks in advance for your help...

Why the hell am I replying to my own thread? Because I just found out that Sygate doesn't support DHCP with Linux, only with Macs and Windows machines... Bugger!
