I just installed mandrakeLinux 8.1 (distro)
Everything works but much too slow.
Here some info :
System: compaq 5070,
Chip: AMD K-6 (3DNow) 350MHz
Memory: 96MB
HDD: 40GB (20 for Windows, 20 for Linux)
swap partition: 400MB
I tried to install less apps but the problem was the same.
After booting it takes betw. 5 and 8 secs (seconds!) to open my 'home'directory.
Pls some help anyone?
it's possible that there's something wrong, BUT... i'm afraid my guess is just that your system isn't fast enough, ,and hasn't enough RAM. If your using GNOME or KDE, try using something smaller, like BlackBox or WindowMaker, as they will noticably runn faster on an older machine
Most likely it's the KDE blob which is making your system really slow. And a bloated kernel.
You could install a lighter desktop environment like: http://xfce.org/
And for the kernel I'm sure there are lots of things you could optimize but that's hardware specific. If you want to get into that you might want to read the kernel howto.
Thank mandrake. It's automount function is buggy, so it takes forever to browse dirs. try recompiling a different kernel for your distro. Or try a different distro. This is, however, only if browsing dirs or opening dirs takes a long time, if the whole pc is slow then try the other suggestions.
