I have had the similar problem with an AMD duron 650 with 500mb ram and an ATI rage 128 card. The game will start and I can play it for a while but it craps out soon after. I was having problems starting it prior to fixing a sound card issue.

on a similar note...

Can't get either TuxRacer or TuxKart to run on my nice shiny new Athlon 1.4GHz with an GeForce 2 MX (actually an Abit Siluro). Keeps coming up with OpenGL problems. The OpenGL Page says "OpenGL and GLX and the X server integration of GLX, are Linux system components, and should be part of the Debian, RedHat, SuSE, or Caldera distribution you use.
You also need an OpenGL hardware accelerator driver" and the NVidia 'drivers' do not appear to do much.

If anyone has some bright ideas, I'd love to hear them. I've played TuxRacer under WinME and it's great - shame it's Windows.
