Angry Mandrake 10 + Vigor 2200 ADSL router

Hi all,
I have just installed Mandrake 10, (my first ever exposure to Linux), and I am having problems making an internet connection. I have an BT Internet Alcatel Speedtouch (green stingray) modem which is connected to a Vigor 2200 USB ADSL router. I plug my windows machines into the router which connect without any problems. Firmware in the router loads settings into the modem when powered up. when I connect a windows PC I use the wizard and say that I want to connect using my LAN connection and it always works perfectly. However I do not know what setting to use when setting up a connection in Mandrake 10, I played about with it for hours and finally got it to connect, (don't know how), but the connection is extremely SLOW. Please can anyone advise me how I should configure a Mandrake connection?
Also the machine never shuts down completley, the progress bar stops close to the end and then hangs, but that may be an unrelated problem. Thanks

Problems with connecting to the net

Here I have a similar problem (though not so critical)
I have installed Mandrake 10 together with a Win XP installation. the installation was simple and lasted for mere 10 minutes.
I began using Mandrake and all was going perfectly well, especially the internet. Until, of course, I had the brilliant idea to install bittorrent.

I installed it and it was going quite well but, out of the blue, the system crashed and failed to return to normalcy. Ok, I did just what every windows user would do: reboot the system.

I rebooted but I could not make my Speedstream 5200 connect to the internet. Also the system started to crash frequently whenever I tried to connect. I created, tested and deleted inumerous adsl connections (I am rather ignorant of Linux's capabilities in this area so if you know any other way of doing this without having to go to "Configure Computer" menu, like a command line thing, I would appreciate) but the problem persists. After that incident I was never able to reconnect to the net again. (I dont know how a problem with BTorrent could affect a adsl connection).

This was the only (and absolutely catastrophic I might add) problem with Mandrake, nothing else to complain.
