Mandrake 10 partition setup
 

Hey hows it going. I havent messed with Linux since Mandrake 6.0 and lack of time kept me from really getting into it and learning my way around. I've reccently decided to force myself to get it installed again and really learn and use it. I got myself a copy of Mandrake 10 com. and I'm preparing my rig for the leap this weekend. My comp has one 80 gig hd with XP installed on it. I bought a copy of partition magic 8 and created a 20 gig partition at the back of the drive for Mandrake. Now I've come to the same question I always got stuck on when I'm about to install Linux, and I've never been able to really find a solid answer or guide. How should a basic Linux system's partitions be setup?


The last time all I used were these 3 :

/boot (bout 25mb)

/ (few gigs)

swap (128mb)


Does this sound ok? Any suggestions? How would you split up 20 gigs for a basic single user Linux system?

that scheme sounds alright, but i always use 1 gig for my swap, since i have plenty of extra space and with if you arent using it its only being wasted anyways, who ever knows when youll need it, but the only suggestion i would make is probably to make /home a separate partion, that way you can keep all the files you accumulate without backing up when you change distributions or hoze your system

well, that depends on yoru needs, no one can tell you really you just have to experiment and resize until you find what you need

With my system, it has a 120 gig hdd, that I've partitioned as follows - I don't use XP much so that's why it doesnt' have too much space.

XP - about 20 gig's

/boot/ - common boot of about 1 gig

/swap/ - common swap about 1.5 gig's (as in about twice my physical ram of 768 meg's)

/gentoo root/ -about 25 gig's

/mandrake root/ - about 25 gig's

The rest, unallocated. I could, if I could be bothered, have it so i've also got a common /home/, but for me, that would be taking the piss - hence I have a home in the gentoo and mandrake.

Google for linux partitioning - there's a fair bit around.

bugger me!, you weren't kidding :D

All the stuff that I read up on before I had to split things up, suggested that best practice was to have a swap partition of about twice the size of the physical ram available to the system.

At 10 gbs ????? well, I'd have thought that'd just be a waste of good disc space.

Still, if it works? great.
