Mandrake 10 Compatability
 

I'm such a nub to linux. Im curretnly downloading Mandrake. I'm gonna format my PC and install mandrake to it. I just need to know if some basic exe formats will work with mandrake. For instance netstumber? and could I install airsnort to mandrake as well? I don't see why not. So My real question is can mandrake open basic exe programs? and I have a wireless PCMIA card on my lap top. Would mandrake suppor the files on the cd?

exe's are windows binaries, so not really. HOwever, WINE lets you run some applications which are native to windows.

The short answer is no, linux by default can not natively run windows/DOS .exe programs.

SO I would have to get WINE? And What about the card drivers that are on the cd?

Windows exectuables, including windows drivers, do not work natively in Linux. *Some* work in wine (which comes as a standard app in many distros), some require Cedega (a non-free Wine derivative), some require Crossover Office (a non-free Wine derivative). Some, like device drivers, are simply non-compatible.

On the plus side, most devices requiring drivers have free/open-source drivers available in Linux, usually installed as part of the setup process initially. :)

Yeha thats pretty cool, but I am more interested in war driving and I dunno if liunux will be the best for that, do you think it would work well?

Pardon me, but while I'm a Linux/Computer Geek, I'm also an *old* fart. ;)

It is using programs like net stumbler with a lap top to find other wireless networks and gaining internet access. You an do this from your car and have free internet and do other fun things.

you might also find that your network card works anyway in linux and you might not need netstumbler (assuming net stumbler is some kind of driver, like it seemed to be on their website).
