Mandrake 10 and "dri"

Hi there all

I kind off fixed the problem with "dri" and mandrake 10

I find that if I activate dri and change my boot up to level 3 and not 5 it seems to work fine then I have 3d acceleration
so now I will have to wait for man10 update or when someone else has the same problem because it doesn't seem that any body nows how to fix the problem

Thanks a lot John

I looked at your post history, as the above post is definitely a "challenge" to prove the sarcastic ending wrong. I don't know if it was meant that way, but I read it like that. I don't care. You didn't ask at LQ for help with that, did you?

I have the same video chipset as you and I have 3d accel and the card is running at 2xAGP speed (as fast as my mobo will let it). I can log in and out without problem. Shutdown problems don't have to do with your video usually.

I see from another post that the "ati" driver was suggested as the one to use (that works for rage and rage pro). You have a rage 128. It has its own driver "r128".

What do you have in your /etc/X11/XF86Config file regarding video card? Are you loading dri as a module too? Is glx enabled? Is there a seperate section to give users permission to dri? Can you post the exact line output of lspci or lspcidrake for your vid card as well (just to be sure)?

Wink mandrake 10 and dri

Hi there

First things first I was in no way being sarcastic in my statements
I thought it had something to do with Man10 since it was so new
if you read it like that then that is your right to, it was NOT! intended that way.

So on to the problem At hand

I did change the driver to ati128 since
lspci states this
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage 128 RL/VR AGP
and lspcidrake
Card:ATI Rage 128: ATI|Rage 128 VR AGP 1x/2x [DISPLAY_VGA]

and yes glx is enabled
in /etc/X11/XF86Config the driver is now r128
I just have to say it was on r128 from the beginning and it did the blackout so I changed it to xpert99 I now changed it back to r128 I am still logging out into console It seems to work that way , but the moment I make the boot level 5
with dri enable it black out after log out
I had man 9.2 before and it never did anything like that ??

do you think it is a bug in man 10 or something I am doing and for the record
here is my XF86Config maybe you see something I did not

Thank you very much John

Perhaps sarcastic is a strong term, but I also have bad way with words sometimes. Give me a few minutes to (fend off my four year old) read through your specs. I may have a good answer for you.

Try adding this option top your "Modules" section
Code:
SubSection "extmod"
     Option "omit XFree86-DGA"
EndSubSection
That may fix it. You have to very carefully read the XF86Config man page to find that, but I think its what might do it. Your motherboard doesn't seem to be a problem.

John,

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you on this. I've been reading up on this whole thing, as I have just installed the x.org server and got rid of xfree86 4.3 altogether. I wanted to know if there were going to be any problems. Seems its about the same as xfree4.4, which has a lot of enhancements to the rage 128 support. That may be your solution - xfree4.4 or x.org.

I think the suggestion that DRI was causing havoc might be a bit true. Why don't you pore through your /var/log/XFree86.0.log and the output of dmesg to see if there are any errors that might suggest you are running more than one version of OpenGL. If MesaGL and the kernel GL are running at the same time, you may have found your problem. I found this little gem in the troubleshooting section at the DRI project's wiki. Once this is figured out, I'll show you where to put the option to enable the 2x AGP you've been missing without realizing it.LOL
