mandrake 10.1 package install question

I am new to linux and need a little help.I am using mandrake(mandriva?)10.1 official.Got the 3 iso files from linuxiso.org and burned them.I figured out how to add urpmi repositories and browse them.

I downloaded [cheops-1.1-1buho] and installed it.Where did it go?I dont know which directory to search in.I am using the default package manager and the gnome desktop.do all d/l and installed packages always go to a default dir?

When I find the install how do I create a shortcut to the desktop? Can I drag it there?

Although linux is new and a little confusing to me I am really glad I found an alternative to MS commercialized crap. This is a great forum.

Thanks for the help.

Jeff

While

the previous link provides some useful info, usually, the RPMs you get through the official package manager do not require you to go through this (stuff that has a GUI usually shows up on one of your menus and stuff that is command line only is usually available there (although sometimes only as root)). The package manager seems to assume that you know what you are doing with this and does NOT necessarily inform you of which category any specific package will fall under (as some do not truly fall into EITHER as they are run more as a SERVICE)

I have the same distro that you are using and cannot seem to find the specific package that you are asking about at the Mandr* site I have been using. Can I ask where you got the package from? BTW I am using KDE, maybe that has something to do with why I am not seeing this here

I have noticed this.I also have d/l and installed some bug fixes and such that I didnt expect to be able to find or need to find. The cheops urpmi is a game.Chess oponents instructor.I dont know how to play chess nor have the desire to learn.I am just trying to figure out this cryptic package thing.I got the urpmi from http://www.linuxlots.com/~buho/?URPMI_Repository .I used this repo while following another online tutorial example.I started with the debian base install 3 weeks ago.I learned the apt-get install pretty well, installed and configured x/kde and could'nt get it to run.I asked for a week on various boards how to accomplish this, printed reams of info from howto sites i was referred to.Still the answers were overly complicated.Sure wish someone would have just said.....Type startx .I am starting to understand from the link aysui gave.If I install a cd burner proggy for example it should automatically show up in the star(start) menu.....cool.Thanks for the info.
BTW is there a site that has a list of urpmi repositories?None of my browsers preinstalled link buttons seem to work. They all take me to a verisign page?
