Mandrake 10.1 Getting Progessively Slower

I need help with Mandrake 10.1. It seems to be getting progressively slower everytime I boot it up. Or at least I've have definitely noticed the boot-up taking longer. We just got a new computer and I decided to put a dual-boot on it. XP and Mandrake 10.1. My computer tech friend set it all up for me so as far as I know it was all set up properly.

Anyways my systems specs are as follows. AMD 64 3200, 1 GB Ram, 128 MB Video Card, 120 GB Hard Drive. Ummm, I think that's all that could be relevent. Just ask if you need to know anything more. Oh and I'm using KDE instead of Gnome right now.

My general use of it so far has been mostly Windows, but I go into Linux now and then to try and learn it. After I'm done in Linux I click on 'restart the computer', so I don't think I'm logging out wrong. Any idea what could be going on to make it go slower and slower?

And one more quick question. Should Linux be much slower than Windows for loading things? For instance loading Firefox in Windows take less than a second, but probably 2 seconds or more in Linux. And double-clicking on picture on my hard drive. Takes no time in Windows, but a couple of seconds to load in Linux. Is this typical?

Nope. It's not.
I had Windows on my Dell 2400. Now, only Linux. I can't remember exactly but Win did not seem to be significantly faster. Booting time was the same or nearly.
Just a thought. Do ,you use the 64-bit version of Mandrake ?
Cheers

I wonder whether it will ever be. With Mandrake buying Conectiva and purchasing them for 1,7 Million €...
They will need your money.

As for your problem, have you checked the services that run on your box ? Some of them are not needed, perhaps.
Go and check them in MCC. Untick the ones you don't want.

Cheers
