MAN page formatting incorrect via telnet/SSH

Just installed redhat 8.0 and when I view man pages on the console they look fine but when I display them via Putty terminal emulator over telnet the hyphens are shown as small a's with circumflex accents. Vi formats just fine. Tried different terminal emulations but no luck. Any ideas?
