Man page directories

Ok, I'm studying for the CompTIA Linux+ LC0-101 exam and I just need some clarification on where man pages are stored. I understand that this can be different depending on the distribution you are working on but so far I've read that man pages are stored in:

/usr/share/man
/usr/local/share/man
/usr/local/man
/usr/X11R6/man

While all these might be containers for man pages on various distributions I highly doubt that I will be given the option to make four selections during the test. So is there one or two of them that are seen as the universal man page directories?

/usr/share/man would the main location for packages to install to. Have to say though, if this is actually relevant to a cert, then it's a pretty crappy cert to go for. Who on earth cares where they go? It certainly has nothing to do with technical skill, just a pointless memory test.

Hi,

If all is set up correctly all man directories are searched. Have a look at the /etc/man_db.conf file (especially the MANDATORY_MANPATH and MANPATH_MAP settings).

BTW: Most of these entries are _not_ distro specific, but by convention: X related man pages go to /usr/X11R6/man and /usr/share/man is global for example.

Hope this helps.

No, but MANPATH environment variable SHOULD point to any directories being used.
See also 'man man'
